Franklin and Franklin Village is located within 2.7 square miles, north of Southfield, south of Bloomfield Township, east of Bingham Farms and west of Farmington Hills within Oakland County. The village was started in 1824-1825 on the Franklin River, and named after Benjamin Franklin by Elijah Bullock and other settlers. It has a current estimated population of 3,150. The Franklin river powered the grist mill and the saw mill in 1837, the year Michigan became a state. The grist mill was converted to the Franklin Cider Mill in 1949. In November of 1969, Franklin was designated as Michigan's first historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its many original mid-19th century properties.
Franklin is known as “The Town That Time Forgot” for its old-fashioned downtown area that consists primarily of original buildings with unique shops, and charming, quaint neighborhoods with historic estate-style architecture. The village has many historic landmarks; the Franklin Cider Mill, Franklin Community Park, Post Office, Fire House, Franklin Village Boutique, Franklin Grill and Tavern, The Paw Boutique and more....
One of the more unique characteristics of Franklin is despite its small size geographically, it has a bevy of services: its own police and fire department, its own library, a large community park, and a very active community that puts on gatherings for its residents several times each summer.
